6:00 AM alarm clock you'll actually love! : The Proboscis Monkey’s Favorite Breakfast
Imagine waking up as the sunrise breaks through the dense canopy of the jungle. You’re nestled in your bed at Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge, still half-asleep, when suddenly
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

Someone is dancing on your roof!
No, it’s not a hotel staff member giving you a morning call. It’s your wild neighbors coming to say hello. You step outside, look up, and there they are: big bellies, prominent noses, and a lot of personality.
Meet the Proboscis Monkey (known locally as Bekantan)!
These quirky primates are regular guests around our lodge every morning and evening. And if you watch them closely, you'll notice one thing: they are constantly eating.
Located right on the edge of Tanjung Puting National Park, Rimba Ecolodge is surrounded by thousands of tropical plant species. But out of all the greenery in the jungle, the Bekantan have one ultimate favorite snack: the young leaves of the Jinjit tree (Calophyllum inophyllum).
Why are they so obsessed with these specific leaves? It turns out they have a very picky belly!
- They have "cow-like" stomachs:Proboscis monkeys are foregut fermenters (like cows or sheep). They need high-fiber foods, but their stomach bacteria can only handle tender leaves!
- Young Jinjit leaves are super soft:While mature leaves are thick, leathery, and hard to chew, young shoots are tender and easy to digest.
- Guilt-free nutrition:Young Jinjit shoots are packed with protein and water. Plus, they are very low in sugar! (Fun fact: Eating sweet, ripe fruit can actually cause dangerous bloating in a Bekantan's tummy, so they stick to salad!)
- No bitter taste:Older leaves are full of bitter chemical defenses called tannins. Young Jinjit shoots haven't developed these yet, making them taste delicious and fresh!
Want to experience the most unique "morning call" in the world and watch these amazing creatures feast in their natural habitat?
Come stay with us at Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge, we’ll take care of everything for your jungle adventure!
