The White-winged Wood Duck
The white-winged duck or white-winged wood duck Asarcornis scutulata is a large species of duck, formerly placed in the genus Cairina and allied with the dabbling ducks. However further analysis has indicated a monotypic species

Historically, the white-winged duck was widely distributed from north eastern India and Bangladesh, throughout South East Asia to Java and Sumatra. It is now extinct in Java. In India, the duck is found only in the north eastern part of the country, with the main concentration in eastern Assam and adjacent areas of Arunachal Pradesh.[8] However, in 2002 it had a population of only 800, with about 200 in Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, 150 on Sumatra, notably in Way Kambas National Park (WIKIPEDIA)
Justification of Red List category
This forest duck is listed as Endangered because it now has a very small and fragmented population which is undergoing a very rapid and continuing decline as a result of the loss of and disturbance to riverine habitats. If this degradation does not stoop, this bird will become extinct.
Our guide at the Satwa Sumatra Ecolodge, Heriono, has often seen this duck on an inlet of the Way Kanan river. Hari is also joining a local community named “ Save The white-winged duck “ with the other friends.

White-winged wood duck – “Mentok Rimba/Bebek Hutan”

Termasuk kategori Daftar Merah
Way Kanan Taman Nasional Way Kambas.
