ANIMAL SIGHTEED AT OUR LODGE

ORANGUTANS at the Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge (ROEL)

One of the great sights at the Rimba is the sighting of an orangutan, usually a solitary male, in the trees overhead the lodge. Hearing the eerie long calls of males is common but sightings occur about once a month.

John Nicolas, the pioneer of the company Solar Power Indonesia, took the attached video during a visit to monitor progress on the complex solar system at the lodge. This male showed some annoyance at human activity around him but caused much interest in both staff and guests.  This small population of orangutans is not in the park as they are on the wrong side of the Sekonyer river, where Palm Oil plantations often illegally go near the river, beyond their legal limits. They are thus important to preserve.

The ROEL is the only hotel on the Sekonyer river where one can see or hear wild orangutans The Tanjung Putting National Park (TPNP), one of the few places left in the world where the orangutans can live in the wild.

The TPNP has been closed since May 2020 as the authorities are concerned COVID 19 may devastate them. The Rimba thus had had no business since March 2020 and is now struggling for its survival. We are obtaining private funding to plant trees in parts of the TPNP which were burnt in 2015. If you wish to support its survival and obtain tax relief for donations go to website https://www.wra.org.au/2018conserveourworld Every $ spent plants trees and adds to the meagre salaries of Rimba Staff.

BAHASA INDONESIA
