About our rice field at Kelimutu Ecolodge – Harvest time !
Without the Lodges of Ecolodges Indonesia, we could not employ those who protect their local environment, so we will show you the system at Kelimutu, where a local family grows rice, and other plants on the land belonging to the Lodge. The crop is then divided 60% to the workers. and 40% to the lodge. This helps to feed the lodge staff and guests, rare as they are at the moment.
How many hands and how many hours contributed to that spoonful of rice?
First, the seed from the previous harvest is soaked and the non viable seed which floats to the top is thrown away. Then it is planted in a comfortable slushy mud bed.
After 2 weeks it is ready to be planted out.

Meanwhile the ‘sawah‘ is being prepared. The land is irrigated and soaked, so the old crop stumps can be ploughed in, now by tractor but sometimes still using cattle, either on a plough or as a herd churning up the mud ready for planting, after fertilizer is added in our case manure.

After about one month the rice is robust enough to be weeded.
After four months the harvest begins. In Bali a small curved knife is used, hidden in the hand to spare the anguished gaze of the rice goddess.

In Kelimutu, a cow had damaged some crop, so the owner had to give a sacrificial cockerel, (later eaten) to prevent further bad luck

Then the cut rice has to be threshed, here using a small petrol driven machine to separate the grain from the stem. Bagged, the rice is distributed and sold to be husked in small local factories. several varieties are grown, ours this season was red rice which proved very productive. We raised about 200 kg of red rice.

Panen Padi di Kelimutu Ecolodge
Di setiap lokasinya, Ecolodges Indonesia berusaha untuk memperkerjakan masyarakat yang ikut melindungi lingkungan disekitar daerahnya. Untuk itu kami akan menunjukkan kepada bagaimana system pengelolaan sawah di Kelimutu Ecolodge yang melibatkan sebuah keluarga setempat untuk menanam padi dan tanaman lain di tanah milik Kelimutu Ecolodge.
Hasil panen nantinya akan dibagi 60% untuk para pekerja, dan 40% untuk pendapatan Kelimutu Ecolodge. Dari hasil ini diharapkan dapat menjadi sumber bahan pokok untuk staff dan tamu kami di tengah situasi seperti saat ini.
Berapa banyak tangan dan berapa jam kerja yang diperlukan untuk bisa meproduksi satu sendok nasi tersebut?
Pertama, benih dari hasil panen sebelumnya direndam dalam air, (benih yang rusak akan mengapung dan dibuang). Lalu benih tersebut kemudian ditanam dalam sepetak tanah sawah, dengan lumpur dan air secukupnya.
Setelah 2 minggu siap ditanam.

Sementara menunggu bibit siap, ‘sawah’ mulai disiapkan.
Tanah sawah diairi dan direndam, sehingga tunggul tanaman lama dapat dengan mudah dibajak. Membajak sawah sekarang sudah menggunakan traktor meskipun terkadang masih menggunakan ternak. Setelah mengalami proses pembajakan lahan kemudian ditambah pupuk kendang dan siap untuk ditanami bibit padi. Kemudian penanaman dimulai melibatkan semua anggota keluarga

Setelah sekitar satu satu bulan, sawah harus dibersihkan dari rumput yang mengganggu supaya padi bisa tumbuh baik.

Setelah empat bulan panen dimulai.
Di Bali, mereka menggunakan pisau kecil berbentuk melengkung untuk menghormati Dewi Padi. Di Kelimutu, seekor sapi telah merusak sedikit tanaman padi kami, untuk itu pemilik Sapi akan memberikan seekor ayam jantan untuk upacara kurban sebagai silbol menolak nasib sial.

Padi yang dipanen harus ditumbuk, disini menggunakan mesin kecil berbahan bakar bensin, untuk memisahkan gabah dari batangnya. Dalam kantong, beras didistribusikan dan dijual untuk dikupas di pabrik-pabrik kecil setempat. Pada musim ini kami menanam varietas beras merah, dan kami berhasil menghasilkan kira-kira 200 kg beras merah.
