The Abu-Abu tree, locally known as Pohon Abu-Abu, is one of the quiet wonders of the rainforest, growing naturally along the banks of the Sekonyer River within Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting. At first glance it may look like just another riverside tree, but for the forest’s wildlife, it is an important seasonal source of life.
This remarkable tree produces seeds that are highly favored by many animals. When the Abu-Abu begins to flower and fruit, the riverbanks transform into lively natural feeding grounds. Birds, primates, and other wildlife are drawn to the nutritious seeds, creating rare and beautiful moments where multiple species gather in one place. For nature lovers, this period offers exceptional opportunities to quietly observe authentic wildlife interactions in their natural habitat.
What makes the Abu-Abu even more special is its rarity in timing. It flowers only once a year, and the window is short. In 2026, the blooming season took place between January to March, turning the riverside into a vibrant corridor of activity. The air feels more alive, the forest sounds richer, and each boat journey along the river holds the promise of unique sightings.
This year, the magic continued. One of our clients came specifically to witness these blooms, and their trip was a wonderful success. Not only were the flowers at their peak beauty, but they also encountered several wild orangutans and other wildlife, including flying foxes actively feeding and moving among the flowering trees. Moments like these remind us how closely wildlife follows the rhythms of the forest.
Experiences like this cannot be staged or guaranteed; they are gifts from nature, revealed only to those who visit at the right time and with patience and respect for the wild. The Abu-Abu tree stands as a beautiful symbol of the rainforest’s natural cycles — and a reminder that every season in the jungle tells a different story.
