Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge: Where Conservation Meets Adventure
In 1991, the International Conference on the Great Apes of the World focused on the conservation and research of all great apes, both Asian and African. The event was followed by a field excursion to Tanjung Puting National Park, which inspired the development of local ecotourism and led to the establishment of Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge.
Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge is a unique ecotourism destination that plays a crucial role as a buffer zone in Sekonyer, supporting ecosystem conservation and sustainable tourism development in Tanjung Puting. Tanjung Putting National Park has 9 species of primate: orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), bekantan (Nasalis larvatus), owa-owa (Hylobates agilis), lutung (Presbitis cristata), beruk (Macaca nemestrina), kelasi (Presbitis rubicunda), monyet (Macaca fascicularis), kukang (Nyctucebus caucang) and tarsius (Tarsius bancanus).
Rimba is truly special, located in one of the few remaining places on earth where Orangutans can be seen in the wild.
It is remote - only accessible by traditional Klotok boat. The property feels as though it is straight out of a movie set, with exotic covered boardwalks connecting the rooms with the restaurant and social spaces.

The Diamond Room offers a refreshing retreat in the heart of the jungle, crafted from Ulin (ironwood), a native Kalimantan wood known for its natural cooling properties. This creates a comfortable, cool space where you can unwind after a day of exploration.
Set in an exclusive block of just three rooms, the Diamond Room provides both privacy and tranquility, making it perfect for guests seeking a peaceful escape. Step out onto your private veranda to enjoy the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest.

EMERALD ROOM
The Emerald Room is a peaceful riverside retreat surrounded by lush greenery and the calming sounds of nature. This cozy wooden lodge is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the forest. Set in an exclusive block of just three rooms.
Step onto your private veranda and listen to the gentle flow of the river while sipping your morning coffee or unwinding after a day of adventure. The large window lets in plenty of natural light and offers lovely views of the trees and plants around you.

THE AMETHYST ROOM
We give the name The Beo Room & The Enggang Room, Named after the Enggang is the iconic hornbill of Kalimantan, offers a calming escape surrounded by the beauty of a lush tropical forest. Each room opens to a shared veranda where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the peaceful greenery that stretches out before you.

CAMP LEAKEY
This is the site of the longest single biological experiment worldwide – a study of the release of orphan Orangutans. Here, you can see up close a mix of wild Orangutans (looking for a free feed) and released animals. If you are lucky (a 25% chance) the alpha male will arrive, a fantastic sight!

PONDOK TANGUI FEEDING STATION
This area is great for hiking! On the way, look for our endemic giant squirrels, native pigs and a huge variety of butterflies. This feeding station offers another chance to see a large alpha male, always an imposing and fascinating figure!

THE TANDJUNG HARAPAN FEEDING STATION
The Tandjung Harapan feeding station is at Park Headquarters and the daily feeding is at 3 o’clock. Here you will see interactions between Orangutans and local people and different aspects of Orangutan behaviour, including a large resident alpha male. Keep an eye out for the famous giant squirrels of the area.

NIGHT SAFARI
This is a short walking tour of the boat after dinner to view night creatures usually in the area of Tanjung Harapan. You may see night birds (owls and nightjars), glowing mushrooms, slow loris, tarantulas; rarely a Tarsier (the smallest primate) and very rarely a Clouded Leopard.

SPECIALTY BIRDING TOURS
Are you a keen birder? Our guides are renowned for their expertise. We offer all-inclusive private birding tours tailored to suit your schedule and interests. These tours take you to the southern end of the park and are usually 3 – 5 days including living on a Klotok Boat.

HARAPAN VILLAGE
The inhabitants of this village originally lived in the park itself. Most of the families are employed in the palm oil plantations, although some work in ecotourism with us. Here you can see the dreadful impact of the rapacious expansion of the palm oil industry.
