Tangkoko & Tomohon Birding Adventure
Discover the remarkable birdlife of North Sulawesi on this compact 4-day birding journey combining the lowland rainforest of Tangkoko Nature Reserve with the cool volcanic highlands around Tomohon and Mount Mahawu.
North Sulawesi is particularly rewarding for birders due to its distinctive Sulawesi birdlife and variety of habitats.
This itinerary has been designed to provide opportunities to explore both lowland and highland environments, increasing the diversity of species and habitats encountered during the trip.
In Tangkoko, early-morning forest walks focus on endemic and range-restricted species, with potential sightings including Sulawesi Dwarf Kingfisher, Green-backed Kingfisher, Knobbed Hornbill, Yellow-billed Malkoha, and a variety of forest birds. The reserve is also renowned for its rich wildlife and rainforest environment.
The journey then continues inland to the Tomohon highlands, where cooler montane habitats and volcanic landscapes offer a different birding experience. Around Mount Mahawu and the surrounding highland areas, birders may encounter species such as Scaly-breasted Kingfisher, Sulawesi Cuckoo-dove, Superb Fruit-dove, Sulawesi Drongo, Warbling White-eye, and Black-crowned White-eye.
With private guiding, flexible birding sessions, and accommodation close to the main birding areas, this tour is ideal for birders looking for a short but productive introduction to the unique avifauna of North Sulawesi.
