Today we fly to Pangkalan Bun Airport, Kalimantan, Borneo. You will be transferred to the dock for the romantic Klotok (a traditional riverboat) cruise downriver to Rimba Ecolodge.

This is a unique and wonderfully remote location that can only be accessed by these two-story wooden river boats.

The rainforest grounds look like a movie set with raised boardwalks connecting the rooms, restaurant and dock, here

you will stay in modern comfort, yet - right in the heart of a forest full of untamed natural beauty.

This afternoon you can explore the lodge grounds, sketching your wild new neighbours such as Proboscis and Macaque monkeys, and perhaps wild Orangutans before dinner followed by an enlightening talk and video on the topic of Orangutan Ecology.

Thursday 23rd

Gibbons Indonesia

You will awake to birdsong and the exotic murmurings of the rainforest. We start the day with a hearty breakfast and another chance to explore and sketch the wildlife and flora at the Rimba Lodge and surrounds. This includes the bird walk where you may hear the cry of the Gibbons and the river, which is a constant source of fascinating wildlife and beauty.

This afternoon we board the Klotok riverboats once more and cruise upriver to the Tandjung Harapan Feeding Station.

Here you will see interactions between Orangutans and local people and catch a glimpse of a large resident alpha male. This is the place also to spot the giant squirrels of the area. You will have plenty of time to sketch and photograph the Orangutans in this setting before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Friday 24th

Organutan Tour

This morning we spend time at a Reforestation Centre. This includes a leisurely 45-minute walk down forest paths and a small medicinal plant area, an excellent birding location.

Afterwards, we board Klotoks once more and cruise towards Camp Leakey, possibly the most famous place for Orangutan research in the world. You will be served a delicious lunch along the way before arriving at the Education Centre, where you’ll discover the background for this special project.

The main event is a chance to experience first-hand, and up-close a typical feeding and the gathering of released and wild Orangutans who arrive for the meal. If you are lucky you will see an Alpha male here too!

As well as the main attraction, wild Orangutans - you’ll see birds, butterflies and reptiles (including Crocodiles) as well as Proboscis Monkeys, Langurs, Bornean Gibbons and Macaques.

Sit back and relax on the boat trip back and either socialise or continue sketching as we pass troupes of roosting Proboscis Monkeys. This is the perfect end to a magical day of wildlife experiences.
