ITINERARY

Day 1: Welcome! (D)

Welcome to Indonesia! You will arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, where you will be met by one of our senior staff members. We will transport you to our partner hotel for a welcome and briefing.

Day 2: Forest Walk and Birding (B/L/D)

After a relaxing breakfast, you will leave for the flight to Labuan Bajo and our Mbeliling Mountain Eco Lodge. This afternoon you will enjoy a bird walk in the protected forest around the lodge with your guide and see some birds including some species endemic to Flores.

This is the latest property in the Ecolodges family and we are very proud of the beautiful grounds we have to offer our guests.

Day 3: Komodo Dragons and Snorkelling(B/L/D)

This is a long day but such an adventure! Rinca Island is the main and most beautiful island of the Komodo group of islands. We purposely choose a slow boat so that you can cruise through The Sea of Flores, past the stunning tropical islands.

You will arrive at the large Island of Rinca around 09:00 depending on currents and will proceed by foot to look for the giants of the lizard world, the Komodo Dragons. The Komodo Dragons are a seriously endangered species, that grow up to 3.5 metres in length. They have a ferocious bite combining serrated teeth with a mysteriously toxic saliva. Here you should also see a number of bird species and hopefully buffalo and deer.

Lunch will be served back on the boat before more opportunities for snorkeling. This is a fantastic area renowned for its biodiversity.

Day 4: Lake Sano and Cunca Rami (B/L/D)

Today you will visit Lake Sano, a sulfur lake, for birding and stunning scenery, and visit Cunca Rami on the way back to the lodge. You will have lunch with locals at a homestay and walk partway around the lake.

This tour brilliantly showcases the natural beauty of the area.

Day 5: Morning Birding at Mbeliling Area and Fly to Bali or Jakarta (B/L/D)

In the morning, you will go birding in the forest around the lodge, and after lunch take a flight to Bali for overnight,

Day 6: Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge (B/D)

It’s time to go to Rimba! Fly early to Java on to Pangkalan Bun in Borneo arriving in the afternoon. After meeting your guide, you will be transported to Kumai to your Klotok riverboat to start the magical trip up the Sekonyer River to the Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge.

It is a relaxing two-hour cruise up the river and if the weather is clear, fireflies will light up the forest until you see the glow of Rimba, where our manager will meet you and introduce you to the magic that is “The Rimba Experience.”

Day 7: Orangutans, Wildlife and Camp Leakey (B/L/D)

After a leisurely breakfast, you will board a riverboat to the famous Camp Leakey to view Orangutans in their natural habitat.

Other primates to be seen include Proboscis Monkeys, Gibbons, Long-Tailed Macaques, and Silverbacked Langurs.

You also have the opportunity to see many birds, crocodiles and monitors.

Camp Leakey (named after Oxford-based scientist Louis Leakey), is one of the homes of Professor Birute Galdikas. Camp Leakey is known as the longest biological, documented, scientific experiment on the globe.

Birute Galdikas is one of Leakey’s golden angels, the others being Dianne Fossey (Gorilla scientist) and Jane Goodall (the Chimpanzee scientist).

There are two species of Orangutan living in Indonesia, the Borneo (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran (Pongo abelii) - both species are critically endangered.

The Orangutan is a close relative of humans and shows an ability to learn signs as a method for communicating with humans. On the cruise home, if the evening is clear, you may enjoy a stunning river sunset with Proboscis Monkeys.

Day 8: Orangutan Feeding Centres, Village Visit and Dinner with Fireflies (B/L/D)

Pondok Tanggui is a second Orangutan release center in an area famous for butterflies. After an Orangutan feeding experience, you will proceed on a walk around the area to explore the varieties of birds, butterflies, and trees.

After lunch and a short siesta, you will visit Tanjung Harapan - the third release center for the afternoon viewing. This center is opposite a village where people were resettled out of the park. If you wish you can visit the village and talk to the villagers.

At night, you will have “Dinner with Fireflies” - an unforgettably magical riverboat experience that is not to be missed

Day 9: Satwa Elephant Ecolodge (B/D)

Today you will cruise back down the river to Kumai and on to the airport to fly to Jakarta and Lampung in Sumatra. You will be met by one of our senior staff for the drive to our Satwa Sumatra Elephant Ecolodge. Rest, explore the grounds and local village and we will brief you on this part of your tour over dinner.

Day 10: Wildlife Tour (B/L/D)

At Satwa Ecolodge you will often wake to the haunting call of The Siomang Gibbons in the nearby National Park.

After breakfast, you have a chance to walk through the park with the aim of seeing the Siomang Gibbons for yourself!

You will also see a variety of birds and deer as well. After lunch, you are back to the park again to Way Kanan for a riverboat trip and a thrilling hike in the Tiger habitat. On the river, you should see birds and primates as well as Deer and wild Elephants. Sun Bears have also been spotted here. Dinner is served back at the lodge and for enthusiasts, you can adventure out on a night bird walk with our resident bird guide

Day 11: Elephant Experience (B/L/D)

Indonesia Wildlife Holiday ElephantAfter a leisurely breakfast take some sugar cane grown in our gardens and head into the park to meet the mahouts and the Elephants at the Elephant Respond Unit (ERU).

You will discover the lifetime bond between mahouts and their Elephants and learn how they play an important role in the community.

In the past, marauding wild Elephants would threaten local villages, and villagers would kill them to protect their crops and people.

The ERU was set up to use trained Elephants to herd the wild Elephants from the villages, protecting all involved from conflict. This innovative program has saved a significant number of wild Elephants and if you are lucky you will get a chance to witness the unit at work.

You will also have a chance to visit the Bambangan reforestation center for a short hike and the opportunity to plant a tree, visit with park staff, and enjoy the forest. During this walk, you may see more wild Elephants and possibly the endemic White Winged Wood Duck.

Day 12: Bali (B/D)

Today is a travel day – we return you to Lampung to catch your flights to Bali via Jakarta. In Bali, you will be met by our drivers to return to the hotel for dinner and a night swim in the pool.

Day 13: Birding, Culture, and Relaxation (B/L/D)

Enjoy a day of shopping, relaxation and visit to Uluwatu Kecak dance,

Vehicles will be supplied also to take you to Nusa Dua, Kuta, and Kerobokan shopping areas if you wish. Of course, you may just wish to chill out and enjoy some time by the pool!

Day 14: Explore Bali (B/L/D)

This is a full day Bali tour including Kintamani and the crater area of Mt Batur, visits to temples, the art town of Ubud, and viewing the famous rice terraces. This is a fantastic introduction to the rich Hindu culture, and the importance of Bali in the Indonesian archipelago.

Day 15: Farewell (B)

WHAT THEY SAY

Once in a lifetime experience!
"What an incredible experience! The morning was an early jeep ride inside the national park to spot lesser mouse deer, greater mouse deer, and loris. The guides bring string flashlights and are experts at identifying wildlife and birds. As the sunrisesd, we had coffee and breakfast outside in nature listening to the birds. Afterwards was a visit to the elephant sactuary to see elephants that were rescued from the logging industry, etc. The afternoon was a jeep safari deep into the national park in search of the ~170 wild elephants that call the park home. Despite having stallite GPS, the elephants remained elusive but it wasn't for a lack of trying. The guides stayed watch well past dark trying to locate the wild herd. It was such an adventure driving through the savanna following the elephant trails. The rangers and guides care deeply about the wildlife and lead educational conservation programs for the community and school children. There is program to replant trees in areas previously used for farming. The lodge has hot showers, large rooms, strong air conditioning, and wifi in the public areas. The lodge accommodated my dietary restrictions with delicious food. Hope to return one day!."

Excellent Location for Wildlife Viewing
"Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge allowed us to stay in relative comfort with air conditioning and hot water while at the same time being close to nature. Proboscis Monkeys on the roof served as an alarm clock in the morning. The staff at the lodge and on the boat went out of their way to make our four night stay comfortable and provide vegetarian meals. This is an ecolodge in the jungle so we didn't expect it to be like a chain hotel in a big city. Until we arrived, we didn't understand how wet this area is. Creaky wooden walkways connect the rooms with the dining room and dock. We spent most of our waking hours on the lodge's boat with the boat staff and Hakim, our excellent wildlife and bird guide. Taking walks is mostly possible in the vicinity of the orangutan feeding stations, but we were able to see many orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and birds on the river and on walks with Hakim's help. We took one night walk with Hakim and a park ranger, which was one of the highlights of the trip."

A lovely visit at this ecolodge
"We spent 4 nights at Mbeliling Ecolodge and generally enjoyed our time while exploring the island. After traveling all day, we arrived at dark, very tired and in a torrential down pour. Luckily, we were greeted by the lodge manager, Aldi, who assisted us to our rooms. We are in our mid 70's, pretty fit and active, but were still surprised at the very steep and deep, slippery (and somewhat dangerous) stairs we had to negotiate to get to our rooms. The rain created a 2-3 inch deep stream coming fast down the stairs, soaking our hiking shoes and pants. We did inquire about being driven up to our room on the service room that brings up luggage, but we were told no. This torrential rain, of course, was a part of nature, and after this rough start, our time here improved.
The A-frame cabin was simple, clean, and comfortable. Drinking water was provided daily, which eliminated plastic bottle use. The restaurant and deck were comfortable with beautiful views. The grounds were maintained and landscaped with lovely flowers and plants. The meals were delicious and made with fresh and local ingredients. All of the staff were very friendly, kind and helpful. And a big shout out to Aldi, the new manager and the highly experienced and courteous driver Edy. Aldi helped us in so many ways, and we greatly appreciated his assistance and enjoyed interacting with him.
It rained for most of 2 days, but we still managed to get out as much as possible. We visited Edy's village, went to a home of a weaver, and walked around the area. On another day, we hiked to the waterfalls. On our last day, we went to Komodo NP for a day tour. We are glad we were able to visit this island, explore its natural beauty, and meet the lovely folks living here."
