The Satwa Sumatra Elephant Ecolodge is set in a lush tropical walled garden just 500 meters from the entrance of Way Kambas National Park, in Sumatra, Indonesia, the home to rare and endangered Sumatran Elephants, Rhinos and Tigers.
Our spacious cottages offer the perfect base to explore the park.
A highlight is a trip to the Elephant Respond Unit in the Park to see the elephants bathing, meet the young elephants and if you want you can take an elephant trek with a mahout.
Another highlight is either a day or half day trip upriver through the National park.
The half day takes you upstream and is fabulous for bird watching and seeing the siamang gibbons on dusk. There are also guided night and early morning walks.

4 days - 3 nights
DAY 01 Arrival – Welcome to Satwa Ecolodge! (LD)
You will be picked up at the Bandar Lampung airport and transferred directly to The Lodge for about 2,5 hours drive. Depending on your arrival time, after dinner, your guide will take you on one of his exciting night walks around the village, where hopefully you will see Sunda slow loris, night birds, and mammals.
DAY 02 Morning Birding, The Sumatran Elephant, and The Bambangan Reforestation Center. (BLD)
You could choose to start in the early morning for birding and look for the Siamang Gibbon. Camping breakfast would be provided at the park. After that, your guide will take you to the government-managed Elephant Training Centre, and learn about the Sumatran Elephant. Another possibility is to visit the ERU ( Elephant Respond Unit ) for a more in-depth look at protecting elephants and stopping crop damage. Back to the lodge for lunch.
After the siesta, on to the Bambangan Reforestation Centre, then a short hike into the park to the reforestation area where you will have an opportunity to plant a tree, ask questions of Park staff about the dangers of fire, and see the forest. During this walk on another river, you may see evidence of Elephant and possibly see the endemic white-winged wood duck. Back to the Lodge for dinner.
DAY 03 The River Boat and Walk to Kalibiru. (BLD)
After breakfast, you will drive slowly through the Park to Way Kanan stopping to see and hear the Siomang Gibbons calling. You will then take a boat to Kalibiru. Then you will proceed on a fascinating walk either to a game viewing platform or to Rawa Gajah, a swamp area where often Elephants are seen. Depending on the season, this area is grassland or under waist-deep water.
Sambar deer, wild pig, binturong, and the endangered white-winged wood duck have been seen here. The trail often shows scats, pug marks and tree scratching of Tigers. This makes the trip exciting.
After a picnic lunch, you will walk slowly back to the boat and who knows what you may see on the river on return, hopefully, primates, different bird species, deer, and maybe elephants. A great day wildlife experience.
DAY 04 Birding, Siomang Gibbons – Transfer out. (B)
Depending on your flight departure time, take an early bird walk with your guide, and also see the village activities or take a walk to hear the Siamang Gibbons with one of the Park Rangers to see and hear the haunting calls of the Siamang Gibbons returning to the Lodge for a well-earned breakfast. After breakfast then you will transfer back to the airport.
