Other primates to be seen include Proboscis Monkeys, Gibbons and Long Tailed Macaques and Silverbacked Langurs.

You also have the opportunity to see many birds, crocodiles and monitors.

Camp Leakey (named after Oxford-based scientist Louis Leakey), is one of the homes of Professor Birute Galdikas. Camp Leakey is known as the longest biological, documented, scientific experiment on the globe.

Birute Galdikas is one of Leakey’s golden angels, the others being Dianne Fossey (Gorilla scientist) and Jane Goodall (the Chimpanzee scientist).

There are two species of Orangutan living in Indonesia, the Borneo (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran (Pongo abelii) - both species are critically endangered.

The Orangutan is a close relative of humans and shows an ability to learn signs as a method for communicating with humans.

On the cruise home, if the evening is clear, you may enjoy a stunning river sunset with Proboscis Monkeys.

DAY 8 - ORANGUTAN FEEDING CENTRES, VILLAGE VISIT AND DINNER WITH FIREFLIES

Tanggui is a second Orangutan release centre in an area famous for butterflies. After an Orangutan feeding experience, you will proceed on a walk around the area to explore the varieties of birds, butterflies and trees.

After lunch and a short siesta, you will visit Tandjung Harapan - the third release centre for the afternoon viewing. This centre is opposite a village where people were resettled out of the park. If you wish you can visit the village and talk to the villagers.

At night, you will have “Dinner with Fireflies” - an unforgettably magical riverboat experience that is not to be missed.

DAY 11 - Elephant Experience

After a leisurely breakfast take some sugar cane grown in our gardens and head into the park to meet the mahouts and the Elephants at the Elephant Protection Unit (EPU).

Sumatra Ecolodge

You will discover the lifetime bond between mahouts and their Elephants and learn how they play an important role in the community. In the past, marauding wild Elephants would threaten local villages, and villagers would kill them to protect their crops and people.

The ECC was set up to use trained Elephants to herd the wild Elephants from the villages, protecting all involved from conflict.

This innovative program has saved a significant number of wild Elephants and if you are lucky you will get a chance to witness the unit at work.

You will also have a chance to visit the Bambangan reforestation centre for a picnic, a short hike and the opportunity to plant a tree, visit with park staff and enjoy the forest. During this walk, you may see more wild Elephants and possibly the endemic White Winged Wood Duck.
