TRANS FLORES SAFARI TOUR

"For one island, Flores offers an incredible array
of landscapes, wildlife and diversity,
it is an absolute gem..."

The island of Flores is one of two major islands in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timor of Indonesia. As a tourist destination, it is still up-and-coming, meaning you can visit the unspoilt landscapes and stunning ecological marvels in peace.

Flores is a beautiful island with volcanic mountains down the middle and fabulous coral reefs, beaches and islands around the periphery.

There are at least six different distinct languages and cultures here and you will enjoy the variety of three of these groups;

The Manggarai in the west around Labuan Bajo and Mbeliling,
The Ngada in the mountains around Bajawa in the centre, and
The Lio around the mountain village of Moni in the east.

You will also experience the fabulous coral reefs of the Komodo National Park where the ferocious Komodo Dragons also exist.

Your Flores tour includes huge living volcanoes, mountains, beautiful valleys and a chance to snorkel or dive on biodiverse corals reefs.

One of the highlights is the dawn walk to the Kelimutu coloured crater lakes, the spiritual home of the Lio people.

This is a long day but such an adventure! Today starts bright and early – ready to board your boat to Rinca Island, one of the main in the Komodo group of islands. Relax as you coast through the reefs of the Sea of Flores, past many islands until you reach the large island of Rinca.

Upon arrival, you will be briefed by a park warden and then begin a 2-5 kilometre walk to discover Komodo Dragons.

The Komodo Dragons are a seriously endangered species, that grow up to 3.5 metres in length. They have a ferocious bite combining serrated teeth with a mysteriously toxic saliva. Here you will also see buffalo, deer and exotic birds.

Enjoy lunch on the boat, and then it is time to explore the ocean! Snorkelling at the fabulous islands on the way home, an underwater paradise of beautiful coral and sea life.

DAY 4 - Bajawa

Enjoy the relaxing drive to Bajawa for the next stage of the tour. You will continue through the mountains, stopping in local villages along the way to get a taste for the Manggerai culture, and up to the plateau of Ruteng, a hill town in time for lunch.

After lunch, you will have time to explore Ranamese Lake, a crater lake in a stunning natural reserve made up of lush tropical rainforest.

We then travel down through valleys towards the sea on the Indian Ocean side, past volcanoes before rising up once more to the mountain town of Bajawa, the main town of the Ngada people.

Hopefully you will see the spectacular volcano of Aimere near Bajawa. Your hotel is in town and you can explore this interesting place in the evening.

Today starts with a chance to discover Bena, a traditional village of the Ngada people, rich in megalith culture before we continue to Ende for lunch. Ende Bay is a beautiful spot where blue and green stones are collected on the beaches and exported all over the world.

Ende is also the commercial hub of this area and a port; it also has one of the best private schools in Indonesia and a visit is possible to the house where Sukarno was exiled for many years by the Dutch.

From Ende we wind through the mountains with spectacular scenery to the Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge.

The Kelimutu lodge is a magical place! It is set on 6 hectares in beautiful gardens on the edge of a rainforest, in a valley of rice paddies, beside a babbling river with breath-taking views of Mount Kelimutu! Here you can wander the grounds and enjoy a leisurely dinner and an early night ready for the dawn excursion.

DAY 6 - Kelimutu Crater Lakes

Kelimutu Lakes Tour

Seeing the Kelimutu Lakes at dawn is a truly magical experience. Up at 04:00 you will drive with your guide to the crater lakes through the base of the Kelimutu National Park and walk up to the lakes through early morning woodland.

Sip hot drinks while sunlight wakes the spiritual volcanic crater and learn about local beliefs and folklore. Then explore all three of the ever-changing coloured lakes. This is an unforgettable adventure.

On the walk back down, there is a cacophony of birds to discover including the varied songs of The Bare Throated Whistler followed by a well-deserved “pancake breakfast” and a tour to the village of Moni to see the market and local agriculture.

After lunch and a short siesta, there is another chance to explore the Kelimutu Lodge grounds and surrounds with your guide.

DAY 7 - Around Moni

komodo tour package

The area around Moni is fascinating and the Ikat weaving is spectacular; some consider it the best in Flores. After breakfast, you will visit a weaving village where you can study how the women make ikat using centuries-old techniques.

This is a laborious and tedious process, but the results are beautiful with meaningful motifs depicting important events in the development of their culture; you will also have a chance to meet some of the villagers and see how we support the community in creating a sustainable future.

After lunch, don your walking shoes for a visit to a beautiful waterfall and natural hot springs. In the early evening, a sunset walk through the valley of the lodge is recommended.

DAY 8 - Farewell

Depending on flight times you will either leave very early or around mid-morning for Ende for the journey back to Denpasar Bali, here you can continue on your adventures or towards home with a lifetime of memories.
