THE EXOTIC CALLS OF SIOMANG
Way Kambas National Park is located in the south of Sumatran island, province of Lampung. The National Park covers an area of 1300 sq km and about 2.5 drive from the airport of Bandar Lampung.
Way Kambas is one of the oldest protected forests in Indonesia, and despite heavy logging, development, and poaching in the area, has retained populations of some of South-East Asia’s most endangered mammals. These include Sumatran rhino, Sumatran elephant, and Sumatran tiger.
This Park is also a habitat for the Siamangs. These primates have a most exotic call and can be easily found by following the sound. They become more active in the morning with their exotic noises, so you just only need to get up early if you wish to see them.
You also will be able to observe them with binocular, but definitely, you need good tools to take a photograph, since they will hang on in the treetops.

Not too many people realized that Siamangs is also playing an important role in the seeds dispersal process in this tropical rainforest. Luckily we have one good photo of this primate from our in-house Satwa Ecolodge guide, Hariyono.

Taman Nasional Way Kambas terletak di sebelah selatan pulau Sumatera, Provinsi Lampung. Taman Nasional ini mencakup area seluas 1300 km persegi, dan sekitar 2,5 jam berkendara dari Bandara Bandar Udara Lampung.
Way Kambas adalah salah satu hutan lindung tertua di Indonesia, dan meskipun menghadapi perambahan hutan besar-besaran, pembangunan, dan perburuan liar, di daerah tersebut terdapat populasi beberapa mamalia yang paling terancam punah di Asia Tenggara dan masih tetap bertahan. Ini termasuk diantaranya adalah Badak Sumatera, Gajah Sumatera, dan Harimau Sumatera.
Taman ini juga merupakan habitat dari Siamang. Primata ini memiliki suara paling eksotis, dan dapat dengan mudah ditemukan dengan mengikuti suara tersebut. Mereka menjadi lebih aktif di pagi hari dengan suara-suara yang eksotis, jadi kita hanya perlu bangun pagi jika ingin melihat mereka.
Kita juga akan dapat mengamatinya aktivitas mereka dengan teropong, tetapi diperlukan peralatan yang bagus untuk mengambil foto, karena binatang ini senang berada di ketinggian diatara pepohonan.
