RIMBA ORANGUTAN ECOLODGE (ROEL) – current situation
The ROEL was built in 1989 by the local owners using their own design, in preparation for an international great ape conference hosted by the Indonesian Government (GOI). At this meeting, the GOI became committed to the preservation of the orangutan, the key species of the Tanjung Puting National Parl (TPNP). Ecolodges Indonesia purchased the property in 2004 when it was named the Rimba Orangutan Lodge. The property became an Ecolodge in 2006 when the company followed the Green Globe 21 regulations for eco hotels.

ROEL is situated on the Sekonyer river, the entrance to the northern part of the park, opposite the TPNP and is the only hotel on this river. Since 1989, the hotel has played a significant role in bringing tourists to view the orangutans, other primates, birds, reptiles, and forests of the park. Ecotourism has provided hundreds of local jobs and plays an important role of community conservation. Many of you have had some wonderful experiences in the park when based at the lodge.

The current situation of the survival of ROEL is critical. From the beginning of March, current bookings for the lodge were all cancelled and since that period no significant income has come into the lodge due to travel restrictions. The TPNP was closed by the GOI in May 2020 to protect the orangutans from possible infection of COVID 19 virus. Many of our staff are now at home with no wages; the staff at the lodge have taken huge wage cuts (up to 80%).
About 150,000 hectares of forest was burnt in 2015
In May the company formed its own Conservation Foundation, the Indonesia Conservation Foundation – Our World with the main aim of attracting funds for help staff salaries inn all lodges but especially ROEL. The main program at ROEL is a large tree planting program over three years in the south of the TPNP where around 150,000 hectares was burnt in 2015. The program is a collaboration between ICFOW and WORLD RELIEF AUSTRALIA where donations can receive tax relief under Australian law; please see https://www.wra.org.au/2018conserveourworld
The program faces a constant encroachment of palm oil plantations into the park, another direct threat to survival.

ROEL dibangun pada tahun 1989 oleh pemilik lokal menggunakan desain mereka sendiri, sebagai persiapan untuk Konferensi International Kera Besar yang diselenggarakan oleh Pemerintah Indonesia (GOI). Pada pertemuan ini, Pemerintah Indonesia berkomitmen untuk melestarikan Orangutan, spesies terpenting di Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting (TPNP). Ecolodges Indonesia membeli properti tersebut pada tahun 2004 dengan nama Rimba Orangutan Lodge. Properti tersebut menjadi Ecolodge pada tahun 2006, setelah perusahaan mengikuti peraturan Green Globe 21 untuk hotel ramah lingkungan.

ROEL terletak di sungai Sekonyer, pintu masuk ke bagian utara taman, di seberang TPNP dan merupakan satu-satunya hotel di sungai ini. Sejak tahun 1989, hotel ini telah memainkan peran penting dalam membawa wisatawan untuk melihat orangutan dan primata lainnya, burung, reptil, dalam hutan hujan tropis. Kegiatan ekowisata di daerah ini telah menyediakan ratusan pekerjaan lokal, dan memainkan peran penting dalam pelestarian masyarakat. Sebagian besar pengunjung pengunjung mendapatkan pengalaman yang luar biasa di taman nasional ini.

Situasi keberlangsungan ROEL saat ini sangat kritis. Sejak awal Maret, semua pemesanan penginapan saat ini dibatalkan dan sejak periode itu tidak ada pendapatan signifikan yang masuk ke penginapan karena pembatasan perjalanan. TPNP ditutup oleh Pemerintah Indonesia pada Mei 2020 untuk melindungi orangutan dari kemungkinan terinfeksi virus COVID 19. Banyak dari staf kami sekarang dirumahkan, pegawai yang masih dipekerjakan telah mengambil pemotongan gaji yang besar (hingga 80%).

Pada bulan Mei perusahaan membentuk sebuah Yayasan Konservasi Indonesia – Bumi Kita dengan tujuan utama untuk mendapatkan dana guna membantu gaji staf di semua penginapan tetapi terutama ROEL. Program utama di ROEL adalah program penanaman pohon selama tiga tahun di sebelah selatan TPNP, dimana sekitar 150.000 hektar hutan habis terbakar pada tahun 2015. Program ini merupakan kerjasama antara ICFOW dan WORLD RELIEF AUSTRALIA, dimana donasi kami bisa mendapatkan keringanan pajak berdasarkan hukum Australia. Silakan mengunjungi situs dibawah ini
