Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge: Where Conservation Meets Adventure
Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge was established following the 1991 International Conference on the Great Apes, which promoted conservation and research of Asian and African great apes. Since then, it has evolved into a key player in ecotourism and wildlife preservation.
Located in Sekonyer village, the ecolodge supports sustainable ecotourism and serves as a vital buffer zone for Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan. Importantly, this protected area is home to nine primate species, including the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), and tarsier (Tarsius bancanus).
Remarkably, Rimba is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can observe orangutans in the wild. Accessible only by traditional Klotok river boat, the ecolodge offers a truly immersive jungle experience.
Moreover, elevated wooden boardwalks connect guest rooms, the restaurant, and communal areas, seamlessly blending with the surrounding rainforest. As a result, Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge exemplifies responsible tourism — helping protect endangered wildlife while also supporting local communities.

WHAT THEY SAY
Incredibly Unique Experience
"Amazing doesn't quite cover it. From the start, the reservation manager answered questions promptly & took care of every detail. Our wonderful guide, Hakim, met us at the airport & helped with a return flight issue before our short drive to the marina. The klotok (wooden boat) was clean, comfortable & the perfect vessel for a river safari (yes, there is a bathroom). You can choose to sleep on the boat (mattresses with mosquito nets), but we chose the lodge primarily for the air conditioning as it is quite humid compared to where we live! We spent two days on the river in your private boat, and Hakim was excellent at sharing his knowledge about the flora & fauna - his natural curiosity & enthusiasm is so enjoyable. Despite our concern about what we would see in the rainy off-season, on our transfer to the lodge we already saw a wild orangutan with her new baby & adolescent. There were plenty more orangutans at the feeding stations, including the huge males, plus many opportunities to photograph proboscis monkeys, macaques, and gorgeous birds. Don't skip the night walk to see glow-in-the-dark mushrooms & tarantulas! Tips: read the traveler info they provide so you pack the correct clothing, hat, thin rain jacket, binoculars & bug spray (I pre-treated my lightweight pants, tops & socks with permethrin prior to travel which helped tremendously, then just sprayed my hands & neck). Stay quiet on the boat & at the feeding stations; don't make sudden movements to keep from scaring the apes, monkeys & birds. Whether served on the boat or in the lodge restaurant, food was very tasty & portions just right (we don't eat a ton in the heat); be sure to communicate if you have allergies or dislikes so they can plan ahead for you. Everyone we met or talked to was very accommodating & works very hard/long hours so don't forget to leave a gratuity for the staff, the boat captain & your guide. And don't be afraid to go during the rainy season - we only had one afternoon of rain & Hakim provided large umbrellas. I couldn't imagine going peak season with hoards of boats & people - at most we saw maybe a dozen other people. Plus we experienced orangutan behavior in the rain - the big male grabbed some nearby branches & made himself an umbrella! I highly recommend Rimba Eco Lodge & wish Batik Air hadn't forced us to leave a day early - I think 3 or 4 days would be much better than our whirlwind 2 days. Thank you, Rimba management & staff!"

Excellent Location for Wildlife Viewing
"Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge allowed us to stay in relative comfort with air conditioning and hot water while at the same time being close to nature. Proboscis Monkeys on the roof served as an alarm clock in the morning. The staff at the lodge and on the boat went out of their way to make our four night stay comfortable and provide vegetarian meals. This is an ecolodge in the jungle so we didn't expect it to be like a chain hotel in a big city. Until we arrived, we didn't understand how wet this area is. Creaky wooden walkways connect the rooms with the dining room and dock. We spent most of our waking hours on the lodge's boat with the boat staff and Hakim, our excellent wildlife and bird guide. Taking walks is mostly possible in the vicinity of the orangutan feeding stations, but we were able to see many orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and birds on the river and on walks with Hakim's help. We took one night walk with Hakim and a park ranger, which was one of the highlights of the trip."
